About the Piece:
Acrylic on 11 x 14 wood stretch canvas. This piece is an unconventional self-portrait of Karen. She wanted to depict her conflicting ethnic identities growing up as an Asian American. She illustrated herself with blonde hair, blue eyes, and an eye bleeding American flag colors to represent her old wish of being the “ideal” symbol of American beauty. In contrast, the bamboo hat, lotus flower, and dragon depict Karen's conflicting Asian identity. Both sides, however, were purposely left flat and seemingly two dimensional to highlight how Karen covered herself in so many different ethnic masks that her true identity got lost in the mix.
