About the Piece
Alcohol-based markers and white gel pen on 11 x 14 mixed media paper. Karen utilized contrast with a black and white eyeball and a structured flow of vibrant colors behind to depict a surreal scenery. Karen wanted to depict how many people are unable to live their lives to the fullest because they are blinded by money, success, and cannot see the bigger picture. The girl looking up at the moon is so blinded by its brightness that she does not realize she is trapped in an eye. If she looked higher, she would see the vivid beauty of color right outside. If you look from afar, you may not see the stars within the eye. Karen purposely created this effect to emphasize the shallowness, the emptiness of looking at instant pleasure rather than future achievements.
